Mind If I Borrow. . .

I am a very creative, imaginative person but some times I have to have something to spark an idea for me, have to "borrow" just a bit from another source to get me started. I've been trying to draw a map of my world but had not been able to come up with anything I liked.

So, I pulled out about thirty maps I had saved from National Geographic magazines and started going through them. I had opened one of Spain and Portugal and was looking at it when one of my cats started to jump into my lap. I dropped the map and when I picked it up, it was upside down. And there was my "new" world in front of me.

I put it on my light table this afternoon and began tracing over the outline in black marker. I changed the province boundaries of Spain and combined Spain and Portugal and have exactly what I've been trying to create. I've also traced over most of the waterways in blue marker, decided on towns and cities and marked with green marker and determined major roadways which are now drawn in purple marker.

Later tonight after Kidlet goes to bed, I'll get out my drawing paper and begin tracing my "new" world and make my final version. WooT!

I also spent a good part of the day downloading fantasy art from the internet to give me visuals for description. I concentrated on faces because I do need visuals of those to really do my descriptions justice. I finally found my hero, my evil bad guy, my starts-off-evil-then-turns-good guy, my evil guy's henchman, my hero's sidekick, and have narrowed down my heroine to four choices.

A pretty productive day considering I have come down with bronchitis and really wanted to spend the day in bed.

I'm not particularly creative with maps--this year, I'm just taking a street map of Venice and renaming everything.

I've also heard of a similar method to yours, except people find blank maps and just turn it sideways, upside down, or mirror image it to get their new country.
